Persuaded Every Time

Since I no longer have TV channels, I couldn’t watch the Packers game while I cleaned my apartment so I instead watched the 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Persuasion,” my favorite of the Austen novels. If you can get through the novel to the last few scenes, it makes the entire story worthwhile.

The interesting thing about the actors in the movie versions of this story is that it’s all about facial expressions and subtle glances. The two characters rarely speak to one another in the novel and most of the dialogue is internal, yet it must be made clear that there is a sort of tension between them. The ending, with the two of them finally communicating and expressing their feelings, gets me every time.
